This post might be a little too honest. I don't really like to cook. Well, what I really mean, is that I'd rather eat then cook. Taking hours to cook something isn't my idea of a fun time, I'd much rather have instant gratification and just eat. I'll deny anyone who says I don't cook, or I can't cook. I feel very confident in my cooking skills. I'd just rather cook a hot pocket than make bread. Lol... Too honest for sure. For those of you like me, here are some fantastic resources I've found in my quest for quick and easy meals.
- Kraftfoods.com. I probably shouldn't advertise a site for a company who produces a lot of processed food, but I'll let you make the call on whether you will support them or not. This site is my #1 favorite site to get recipes from. Most of the recipes are short and easy, and they are organized in a fantastic manner. Best of all, pictures. What more could you ask for? See for yourself.
- Easy dinner planning. I took a Women's Nutrition class at the U of U. It was really interesting. We had a guest speaker one week who filled us in on a super quick and easy way to plan dinners for a week. She sits down on Sunday afternoon to plan the week. She writes 5 easy dinners on post it notes. For example, one note would say "Chicken with broccoli and cheese" another would say, "Frozen Pizza." After she has all her meals picked out (and she always gives herself a bye. So one night they'll have takeout), she writes all the ingredients she needs for all 5 meals. Then she shops for the week. She puts the post it notes on her fridge. When she gets home from work and has to decide what to make for dinner, she looks at the fridge, and picks a post-it. She knows she already has all the ingredients she needs, and she has flexibility to choose from a variety of options, or takeout if she wants. She said she's taken the SUPER easy route, and she reuses post-it notes. Badda-Bing-Badda-Boom!
- Bertolli's Frozen Meals. Bertolli's is a miracle. They have frozen pasta meals for 2, I think they are around $7 a bag. These meals take about 10 minutes to cook (my kind of timeline!), they don't need any extra ingredients, and they taste fantastic! I try to always keep one in the freezer for those times when I really don't want to make something fancy, but also don't want to waste money eating out. $7 for two people is a pretty good deal I think!
- Taco Bell and Little Cesar's $5 pizzas. I'm not going to lie, I'm a big fan of inexpensive fast food. And it just so happens that we live in close proximity to a taco bell and little cesar's. =)
- Finally, for those times when you are determined to make a nice meal that will take a while, the trick is appetizers. Just munch on a veggie tray, cheese sticks, chips and salsa, or something else that is easy, to tide you over while you cook that amazing meal. It's like the best of both worlds (how many of you have miley cyrus's song stuck in your head now?). Instant gratification because you can eat right away, and you get to work on your cooking skillz. =)
Does anyone else have fabulous quick tips they'd like to share?
Wow, I loved this post! Thank you for sharing your ideas... I especially love point 2 which I will implement right away! Since moving to Japan, I have really only cooked the same 7 recipes over and over again! How monotonous! Either that, or we eat out. I really want to be able to cook more, but many of the ingredients for my favorite recipes from home are not available here in Japan... not to mention, no one cooks with an oven at home! You've inspired me to put more effort into our meals and start PLANNING out the week better. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteP.S. all this talk of chips and salsa, and taco bell has made me homesick for American food!!
Thanks for your comment Vanessa! I'm so happy this helps.
ReplyDeleteI'm homesick for Japanese food. =) All the pictures of food you post on your blog look sooo good!!
soooooo. i wrote up a huge dealio that went on so many tangents. i re-read it and erased it. it was literally a novel about how there aren't any healthy fast food places that are tasty and inexpensive. then i attempted to get back on topic. it didn't work. i then went on about how i have no portion control and how the appetizer dealio would never work for me.
ReplyDeletenow i'm writing this much shorter than novel short story. and it's tangenty. sorry Amber. i tried.
LOL!! Becky you are hilarious!
ReplyDeleteIf you are interested in healthy fast food you should try a place called Au Naturale (www.goaunaturale.com). It's on 900 East and 2100 South. It's a little more expensive than $.89 tacos from taco bell (ha ha), but it is pretty good.
P.S. I'm glad you are still alive.
so I hate cooking too, most of the time, that is. Usually my problem is that I hate thinking of what to cook with what I already have in my pantry... a friend tipped me off to a website called
ReplyDeletewww.supercook.com
I have used it a few times now and find it very helpful. You enter in all the "ingredients" and "food" you have available in your kitchen and then it tells you what you can already cook or what simple ingredients you need for other options. LOVE THAT! And there are tons of easy quick recipes too. Most will say how long the take too.
Julie! That is a fantastic comment! I just checked out that site. It looks way cool.
ReplyDeleteLol, I wonder how many things I can make with Top 'o Ramen and Canned Roast Beef... Those are the two things in my cupboard I can't get rid of... Ha ha.
Thanks for sharing that site!
