I know that the swine flu is pretty rampant right now, but I still think that it wouldn't be such a big deal if the media and everyone else didn't freak out about it so much.
Back before the dawn of time (okay, this isn't fact. ...or is it?) people got sick with the flu all the time. In fact, they made a holiday out of it. Flu season. Okay, it isn't a holiday, but it is a nationally recognized season. During these flu seasons people always got sick, and some people did die. It wasn't until the swine flu came out that the mass hysteria began.
I understand that people are concerned about getting sick, especially "when death is on the line!!" (ha ha, I just had the voice of the Sicilian off Princess Bride in my head). I understand that people are concerned, but lets look at percentages. Thanks to a handy thing I call Google (yes, my second love), I just found this handy article. The previously referenced article says that only 2% of the people who have caught swine flu have died. It also says, they still have to double check that number to make sure the 2% of people actually had swine flu.
In other news... While I started typing in "what percentage of people die from swine flu" into my google search, one of the auto fill results that showed up was "what percentage of women shave their [starts with a p, rhymes with schmubic] hair" LOL! I had to edit that a little to be less offensive, but I still think it's hilarious. Do people really search for it that often that it's an auto fill option?? Wow.
But I digress... Back to the original argument. I feel that there is an extreme hysteria over the swine flu. People just need to chill out. Think of it this way, if you get the swine flu now then maybe you are less likely to get it later. Bonus!
For those of you who are still concerned, here are some resources:
