Salt Lake City Events

When Adam and I were first married, we didn't really get out much. We were both working and going to school, so we used all our extra time to adjust to married life.

It was Kristen and Logan (emphasis on the Kristen) who showed us (well, me in particular) what the wide world of activities is like! Kristen has a fabulous insatiable desire to go exploring and experiencing. It's inspiring.

After spending a summer with those crazy katz in Denver, Adam and I started to go out and do things!

Salt Lake is a great place for events and activities. I'd like to introduce a few resources for you to use, and don't worry, there is a great selection of events that won't break the piggy bank.

Before I start, remember that if you are a student, you most definitely should take advantage of it! There are student discounts everywhere! When in doubt, just ask.

Alright, my favorite free group of events is through the Salt Lake Film Society. You can sign up to receive their weekly emails. They usually have 4 or more film showings a week. Probably all of the films are independent, but they are on a very broad variety of topics, and are in nice venues. Oh, and did I mention that they are free?

We live by the U of U, so downtown is very accessible, and our favorite place to go. The Downtown Alliance is a really thorough and very well organized group who sponsors events downtown. Be sure to check out their website for current events. They sponsor the summer Farmer's Market in Pioneer Park, and they set up the free Thursday night concerts at the Gallivan Plaza during the summer.

Also downtown is our FAVORITE comedy club! The Off Broadway Theatre puts on parody plays, and has an improv group which performs multiple nights a week. They are G rated, and ridiculously hilarious. And they give discounts to students!

This is a funny one, but the University of Utah has a Swing Club. It's free, they meet every thursday. It's a fun bunch of people, and they do an hour of instruction before they get their groove on. Anyone can attend, you don't have to be a student.

Some great places to see a variety of events going on are NowUtah.com and The Mix section of the Salt Lake Tribune (sorry to the dnews lovers, I'm an sltrib girl). NowUtah mails a newspaper to our home every week. It has a list of all the events for the week (which is also found on their website). The Mix is printed in the trib on Fridays. It has all the new movie premieres, and a list of local events/concerts/activities. I like the printed version of The Mix much better than the online version.

Citydeals.com is a place you can go to purchase gift cards for your favorite restaurants and otherwise. The trick is that you can purchase say, a $50 gift card, but it only costs you $25 + shipping. It's pretty legit, and a good place to save money if you want to eat at finer dining establishments. Just make sure you allow extra time for the card to be mailed to you.

Also, keep on your eye out for the Old World Christmas Market. It's a farmer's market type event. This year it will be held at the Union Pacific Depot at Gateway.

What are your favorite places to go or things to do? Are there local establishments that hold weekly events that you love? Where do you find ideas to make life an adventure (or does the adventure join your life whether you like it or not? :)). I'd love to hear your comments.

  1. Very cute ottoman, very cute pics from the game & halloween, and your persona pics, and THANK YOU for this post in particular! Seth and I are in need of some nights out on the town. We are so boring now... hopefully we'll be able to find a baby sitter and venture out to some of these fun things! I really want to go swing dancing! :)
